Greensboro Wants You To #InvestEast: What Does It Mean?

Mayor Nancy Vaughn and several City Council members were present for the new campaign announcement: #InvestEast.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- East Greensboro Now, an organization that strives to build economic opportunities in East Greensboro, held a 20th anniversary celebration at Bennett College Thursday night.

Mayor Nancy Vaughan and several City Council members were present for the new campaign announcement: #InvestEast.

City Councilwoman Sharon Hightower said you will be seeing the hashtag #InvestEast on buses and billboards around the city soon.

Hightower says East Greensboro is the place to be, and the place to invest. "We need you to help us spread the word about the greatest place to be in the city, east Greensboro is moving into the future."

East Greensboro Now is hoping to bring retail, restaurants, affordable housing and office space to the east.

Executive Vice President of East Greensboro Now, Phil Barnhill, is optimistic.

"We’re trying to fill in the gaps, some of those large projects whether it’s the House of Prayer site or Revolution Mill, which was a huge project, we have a number of locations throughout east Greensboro that create opportunity."

That 14-acre site across from United House of Prayer on East Market Street was bought by the church more than a decade ago and it sits empty to this day.

"That will probably be a mixed use project where you have different types of housing and retail office space but it's going to be a huge investment and destination point. We know they have plans in place but we can’t say exactly, but they have shared the types of things they’re thinking about," Barnhill said.

The city is offering tax incentives for those who want to build or bring business to the east.

Publix Distribution Center was the latest big announcement of investment in the east.
