GREENSBORO, N.C. — History is being made on the greens at Gillespie!
The Wyndham Rewards has finally unveiled the long-awaited mural dedicated to the Greensboro Six.
“For such a long time the story of the Greensboro Six was not known, and today we are giving their story greater light. He would be so proud because this mural will encourage other young people to learn about the Greensboro Six and hopefully inspire a new generation of African Americans to take up golf," said Chris Simkin, son of one of the Greensboro Six, Dr. George Simkin, Jr.
These six Black American men, who were instrumental in integrating golf courses across the United States, will now be enshrined at the very place where it all started.
“I've spent countless hours on this course, and I love walking round this course, but now to see this mural and to see how large this is, it really makes a big statement," said Simkin.
Now their visage lives on thanks to artist Vincent Ballentine, whenever you pick up a club at Gillespie, you can’t miss them standing tall, whether or not they realized they changed the *course* of history.
“I think they knew what they did but to the extent of what they did, I don’t think they would have ever known. But one thing that my father did know, and he saw players like Tiger Woods, there would be no Tiger Woods without the golfers out here doing what they did.”
These men have officially cemented themselves as Greensboro icons for years to come.
