GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Police in Greensboro will begin to focus their attention to traffic safety in the area of Spring Garden Street.

The traffic safety initiative will start on Tuesday and last for nine weeks. The Greensboro Police Department says it will increase safety along a four-mile stretch between West Market Street and Mendenhall Street. The area is often a busy section, Greensboro Police Officer R.B. Smith says, "This roadway is a primary thoroughfare for students, faculty, and motorists traveling to and from the downtown business district."

Police will be in both marked and unmarked vehicles. The department picked the area due to crime data and crash information.

An analysis reveals for the same nine-week period in 2013:

  • 29 reported crashes involving 81 occupants, five whom sustained injuries
  • Four cases of breaking and entering
  • Two robberies
  • 36 larcenies
  • Two auto thefts
