Card skimmers at Walmart stores were bluetooth-enabled, meaning crooks went back for card information

Five card skimmers have been located at four different Walmart stores in Guilford County.

GREENSBORO, N.C. —

Greensboro Police say they're confident they'll find the people who placed these skimmers onto registers throughout Guilford County.

Thursday, we learned police found three card skimmers at two Greensboro Walmart stores.

Two were found on registers at the Wendover Avenue Walmart, another at the Battleground Avenue Walmart.

Two were on self-checkout registers, the other was placed on the register at the tobacco counter.

So far, five skimmers have been found at Walmart stores in Guilford County, including two in High Point.

All of the devices were installed on the same day, November 18, 2022.

Detective Joseph Harrill says these devices are Bluetooth enabled.

This means those responsible would have to go back into the store in order to download the stolen information.

In a busy store, that also makes skimmers like this even harder to spot.

"This is a Bluetooth skimmer but if you go into Walmart and try to scan for Bluetooth devices are going to get hundreds of them. That might work at the gas pumps, but inside a store, where there are lots of people in other devices, I wouldn't really count on that," said Harrill.

Walmart says they have put additional security measures in place, including daily register inspections.

So far, between 200 and 300 people have had their benefits stolen, totaling hundreds of dollars, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

The state is still working with the federal government to find out if the stolen benefits will be reimbursed.

Police say the best way to protect yourself is to keep an eye on your accounts.

If you see something suspicious, report it to police.

That is the only way police can track who has been affected and where the fraud may have originated.
