GREENSBORO, N.C. — UPDATE: High Point Police submitted two separate DMV-349 reports from the crashes on August 5. Greensboro Police Sgt. A.J. Smith and Officer S.J. Cox were the drivers involved in the vehicle containment apprehension technique. Officer N.T. Bandaly was a passenger in the vehicle driven by Cox. All three officers have been placed on administrative duty pending the investigation
The Greensboro Police Department will petition for bodycam footage of a crash that killed a 17-year-old on Franklin Boulevard Monday afternoon.
Greensboro Police Department Chief John Thompson is filing a petition with the court for a release of bodycam footage after police tried to stop a black Dodge Charger on July 26.
Police said while they were trying to stop the car, a passenger fled and was apprehended with a modified handgun. The driver of the Charger escaped and was not found.
Ballistics linked the handgun to two shootings in Greensboro.
On Monday, officers spotted the Charger around 2 p.m. near Holts Chapel Road and Franklin Boulevard.
Officers said they attempted to contain the vehicle, but it struck a police car and left the scene. After a brief chase, the Charger crashed into a stone retaining wall at Franklin Boulevard and Burlington Road.
The 17-year-old driver was extracted and given life-saving measures but was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
"I'm saddened to report that the driver was a 17-year-old male," Chief Thompson said. "I would ask for the community to understand that this young man's family needs support -- not speculation -- during this difficult time."
By state law, the HPPD has 10 days from the date of the incident to submit the DMV-349 reports. A DMV-349 is required for any reportable motor vehicle crash in North Carolina.
The HPPD also is conducting reconstruction investigation into the deadly crash, which is expected to take more time.
Once that is completed, Chief Thompson will file a petition with the court for the release of body-worn camera recordings and video-mounted camera recordings in keeping with departmental policy involving critical incidents. If the petition for release is granted by the court, the GPD will release recordings from this incident consistent with any conditions set by the court.
The officers involved are on administrative duty pending the investigation.
