GREENSBORO -- The Greensboro Police Department (GPD) arrested one of its own officers Wednesday and charged him with a criminal misdemeanor, following an investigation into an allegation of indecent exposure.

Officer J.W. Way is suspended without pay. GPD said in a news release it received a report Sept. 10 about an allegation of misconduct. The allegation stemmed from Aug. 27, when a woman accused Way of exposing himself to her at her workplace.

Police have not said whether Way knows the woman who made the accusation.

Police said following the filing of the report Sept. 10, the department launched an investigation the next day and gathered "sufficient information." That information caused them to suspend Way with pay Sept. 12 while concurrent criminal and administrative investigations continued.

Way will have an administrative hearing at a later date. Until then, GPD said it cannot comment on further specifics surrounding Way's case.

Interim Chief of Police Anita Holder wrote in the news release, "We are deeply disturbed by this incident. The men and women in GPD who do the right thing day in and day out feel betrayed by any officer's decision that casts us in an unprofessional light."

Way joined GPD Feb. 16, 2005. He holds the rank of Police Officer III and assigned to the Southern Patrol Division.
