Greensboro police chief gives emotional tribute to fallen officer

Chief Thompson remembered Sgt. Nix as a true servant of the community.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson teared up as he offered kind remarks of fallen officer Sgt. Dale Nix during his funeral service Thursday.

Sgt. Nix was off-duty on Dec. 30 when he saw people attempting to steal beer, tried to stop it, and was shot and killed at a Sheetz in Colfax.

Several gathered at Westover Church to honor his memory.

Chief Thompson remembered Sgt. Nix as a true servant of the community.

"Sgt. Nix will forever be remembered as a hero. A guardian of peace, a beacon of hope, and a true embodiment of service," Chief  Thompson said.

"He was someone who brought light and laughter into the lives of those he knew. His kindness, warmth, and genuine care for others were among the hallmarks of his character."
