Greensboro Neighbors Chip In, Buy a Community Snow Blower

Frank LaSenna says it takes about 20 minutes to get the job done before he passes it on to his neighbor. Both time and money, well-spent.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- One Greensboro neighborhood is winning snow storms all thanks to a group investment.

The Dunlin Square community does not include priority roads when it comes to plowing snow.

"By the time they get to us, because we’re a small side street, it could be days," explains Frank LaSenna, who lives in the neighborhood.

During a storm three years ago, Frank and his neighbors looked into getting a private plow to dig them out sooner, but that would have costed hundreds of dollars each time they needed it. So they figured they'd put their money toward something else.

"We all chipped in and we bought a snow blower," Frank tells. "For the last three years we’ve had a clean street, clean driveways. Aside from the initial cost for the blower it hasn’t cost us anything."

Frank remembers the blower costing about $900, split between about 12 neighbors. Every time it snows, they bust it out. He keeps it in his garage.

"Now what we do, is a person will clean their driveway and after they clean their driveway they’ll just proceed across the street and clean that patch. By the time you’re through, just pass it from house to house, the street is clear and everybody could drive."

Frank says it takes about 20 minutes to get the job done before he passes it on to his neighbor. Both time and money, well-spent.

"The proof is right there," Frank says pointing at the road. "Take a look at the street."
