GREENSBORO, N.C. — What are you and your neighbors talking about?  Is it the overgrown grass on the corner of your subdivision? How about the house with that truck in the yard and it doesn't work? Or could it be the neighbor doing renovations, but the old carpet has been on the front lawn for a week now?

Inevitably, someone calls the Greensboro City Code Compliance office, right? You can call and leave a name, or not.

"Once we receive that call we have an inspector go to that location and if we find nuisance violations, we give the owner 10 days to come into compliance," said Larry Roberts, Manager of City of Greensboro Housing & Neighborhood Development.

That's if the city can find the owner. Sometimes these 10 days out because it takes longer to find the actual owner. And if the owner doesn't take responsibility, the city cleans it up and sends a bill.

"Once we send the bill, you have the opportunity to pay it, if you never pay it, then it goes on to a lien of the property," said Roberts.

The City of Greensboro Code Compliance Department resolved 1,336 vehicle cases last year and  2,865 other nuisance cases.

What if your house is a nuisance?

Maybe your lawnmower broke or you don't have the money to rent a pressure washer to be in compliance with your HOA.  The City of Greensboro has a solution.

It's called the Neighborhood Toolbox. Lowes donated $12,000 worth of tools to this program and you can use them for free.

"If you find yourself to be in violation, we have the lawn mower and the weed eater that you need for free. Come and take care of it and then you don't have to see us," said Roberts.

Anyone living in the city limits can use these tools for free as long as it is a non-commercial use. There's a whole list of tools available.  You can pick up and return the tools on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 11 am to 1 pm at the Greensboro Sportsplex Parking lot.

You request the tool using an online form.
