Greensboro Moving Forward With Downtown Development Project

The City of Greensboro is getting taller -- new construction is changing the skyline downtown and more development is on the way.

GREENSBORO, NC -- The City of Greensboro is getting taller -- new construction is changing the skyline downtown and more development is on the way.

Plans to build two new hotels, two parking decks, and number of new retail and business offices are already in the works.

It's all part of the city's downtown development plan.

City leaders say the project could create 3,000 new jobs in the next five years.

On Tuesday, city council was scheduled to vote to finalize the downtown development deal but the discussion was delayed.

City councilwoman Yvonne Johnson says plans are still moving forward, the city just want to make sure they have all the details worked out.

“People are excited about it. Council is supporting it,” said Johnson. “We just need to make sure it's right and we cover all the bases and that's what we're doing.”

Construction is already happening all over downtown.

Two buildings are in the works right across the street from First National Bank Field.

Crews are currently building a $65 million hotel and apartment complex on Eugene Street.

Developers also have plans to build a 9-story office building at the entrance of the ball park and another hotel across from the International Civil Rights Museum.

To accommodate all the extra people that this will bring, the city plans to build two new parking decks in the south end of downtown.

Johnson says the goal is to keep growing, attract more visitors, and create as many jobs as they can.

“We want a vibrant downtown,” said Johnson. “When your downtown dies, your city just begins to disintegrate. This is what is happening in many places. We have built it and we have worked on it. It's alive and we want to keep it alive.”

Johnson says the plan is for city council to vote on the downtown development project at its next meeting in early December.
