GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Greensboro doctor's medical license has been revoked by the North Carolina medical board for "inappropriate prescribing of narcotics, benzodiazepines, and other controlled substances without substantiating a diagnosis justifying the issuance of a controlled substance," said a ruling from a North Carolina Medical Board ruling.
According to documents, Wayland McKenzie, a family medicine doctor in Greensboro did not recognize, diagnose, and appropriately treat serious medical conditions.
The 13 page ruling looked at patient records for six different patients of Doctor McKenzie.
On top of severely overprescribing opioids the report says Dr. McKenzie ignored signs of opioid abuse.
One patient told multiple stories about his medicine being stolen by people and police, another said he just ran out because he used too many.
Two of the patients' situations were bad enough they were actually sent to the hospital for opioid abuse.
The State Medical board said it found out because family members were concerned.
"The complaint alleged that Dr. McKenzie was prescribing liberal amounts of opioids and he was well known in the community for handing out opioids without much difficulty," said Jean Fisher Brinkley with the North Carolina State Medical Board.
