Greensboro company picked to expand electric school bus fleet in North Carolina

Carolina Thomas will manufacture more than 60 electric buses for districts across the state.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — The state picked a Greensboro company to help bring green energy to school buses.

Carolina Thomas will provide more than 60 electric buses for school districts across the state.

WFMY News 2's Nixon Norman learned about ongoing efforts to push clean energy forward.

This push to transition from diesel to electric bus engines is all a part of the environmental protection Agencies Clean School Bus grant program.

A program that leaders in North Carolina are taking advantage of 26.7 million will help provide new electric school buses to school districts throughout the state — mainly in the Charlotte and Durham areas.

That money is being handed to Carolina Thomas LLC a company chosen to replace 61 diesel buses with 114 electric models across 11 North Carolina districts.

In 2023, Randolph County Schools was the first school system in our state to receive an electric bus. It was all a part of an electric bus pilot program.

The governor's office said they will continue working to secure critical federal funding for electric school buses as the state continues its transition to a clean energy future.
