GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro city manager's resignation had nothing to do with the incident that occurred at his home on Dec. 28, according to Mayor Nancy Vaughan.
Taiwo Jaiyeoba resigned as city manager, according to the city council who accepted his resignation.
On Wednesday, Mayor Vaughan shared that Jaiyeoba violated an internal policy that other employees have been fired over. Because it's a personnel matter, she can't discuss it.
Mayor Vaughan said the city council learned of the violation last week, so the process moved quickly.
It comes amid a growing controversy over releasing bodycam footage related to the incident at Jaiyeoba's home.
Police responded to Jaiyeoba's home for some sort of dispute involving him and his two daughters. Officials said Jaiyeoba was hurt, and his daughters were not. No charges were ever filed, according to police.
It's not clear exactly what happened.
A judge recently signed off on releasing the video — but the city filed an appeal to block the release. The process could take months to sort out.
The city has since released the following statement about his resignation:
The City of Greensboro expresses its sincere appreciation to Mr. Jaiyeoba for his dedicated service. His leadership has been pivotal in driving our city's progress and initiatives, and his contributions are deeply valued. As we navigate this transition, Deputy City Manager Chris Wilson will resume the role of interim city manager, a position he held prior to Jaiyeoba’s hiring. The City will begin the search for a permanent successor. During this interim period, we have complete confidence in our capable senior leadership team to ensure the continued efficient delivery of city services. We extend our best wishes to Mr. Jaiyeoba in his future endeavors, thanking him for his dedication to the City of Greensboro.
Jaiyeoba worked for the city for just over two years.
