GREENSBORO, N.C. — A new rezoning ordinance was passed at a city council meeting in Greensboro Tuesday.
More than 60 people showed up to express concerns over the ordinance.
The change allows for plots of land at 2737 and 2745-2767 Horse Pen Creek Road to be turned into an apartment complex with 380 units on 21 acres of land.
Those who live in the Quaker Run and Saddle Creek neighborhoods did not want the change citing added traffic to their neighborhood and congestion.
"The proposed project is just way too much," one neighbor said.
Councilperson Sharon Hightower, the only person to vote against the ordinance, said the area could be overdeveloping too quickly. She also said she wants to see more development in east Greensboro.
"I am an advocate for east Greensboro. I don't want to see everything build on one side of town," she said.
In the end, the ordinance passed 8-1. Council members said they understood the concerns, but said the approval was more about looking toward the future of Greensboro and making sure there would be affordable rental homes for years to come.
