Grandfather Mountain Records 124 MPH Winds To Break 2-Week-Old Record

After midnight Monday, the weather recording station at the Mile High Swinging Bridge registered a three-second gust of 124 miles per hour.

LINVILLE, N.C. — A new wind speed record at Grandfather Mountain Monday morning blew away the previous high.

After midnight Monday, the nonprofit nature park's weather recording station at the Mile High Swinging Bridge registered a three-second gust of 124 miles per hour. That's the highest speed since the new station was installed in 2008. The measurement is preliminary and has yet to be verified by the National Weather Service.

If verified, this beats the previous high from earlier this month, when 121.3 MPH was recorded around 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13.
