GREENSBORO, N.C.-- Officers with the Greensboro Police Department (GPD) are working a double homicide case after two bodies were found in a burned vehicle off Thurston Avenue.
Police said the car was found Monday afternoon by two city employees.
Thurston Avenue dead ends into a wooded area that is owned by the City of Greensboro and used as a water and sewer right-of-way. It is a remote area that isn't easy to access. When the workers saw the car, police say they went to investigate.
"That's an unusual sight so they went down there to see what it was and they found a car that had been burned and what they believed to be bones in the vehicle," explained Captain Mike Richey, Greensboro Police Department. "At that point, they immediately backed away from the car and when they backed away from the car they called the police."
Police believe the victims may be a mother and son reported missing Sunday evening by a co-worker of the woman. The victims are tentatively identified as Asia Larose Brown, 22, and her son Ashton Paul Brown, 2. The two were last seen Friday, February 20.
Due to the condition of the remains, positive identifications are pending further examination by the State Medical Examiner's Office.
Police have classified the deaths as homicides.
"Right now, what we are really looking for is anyone who could have been in this area Friday, Saturday or Sunday because this could have been anytime in that period," said Captain Richey.
"We are hoping someone was working in this area, someone saw something, someone knew something or someone knew Asia or Ashton and knew enough about Asia, what she does in life and what her world consists who can give us some information on who could have possibly done this."
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Asia and Ashton is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000 or text the tip to 274637 using the keyword badboyz. All calls to Crime Stoppers are anonymous.
