GREENSBORO, N.C. — Looking for some extra money? It might be time to dust off the stuff in storage and have a yard sale! According to signs.com more than $4,000,000 is spent every weekend in America on yard sale stuff. But what should you sale? CNET researchers found the top dollar items are stuff people really need.
“Really diving into essentials. That's where people are willing to pay money. So looking at, let's say, it's that baby crib. People are always going to have babies, right? Looking at that baby crib, looking at that stroller, looking at even those clothes," CNET's Dashia Milden said.
But to make the most cash, it doesn’t hurt to try and sell all the other stuff just sitting around your house too.
“So if you really are thinking about it and you haven't touched it, let's say for like a year, then you might be able to part with it. But if it's something where, like my kid's bike that I know he hasn't rode all winter, but he's probably going to ride this summer, I'm going to hold on to that one a little bit longer," Milden said.
The AARP adds that right now costume jewelry is selling well. Along with vinyl records. And tools always fetch a high price.
Plus this is a great idea. Consider selling cold sodas and water. Even if no one buys your stuff, you can make a little profit off of those.
One more thing to remember. Pricing right is key. Signs.com says overpriced items is the fastest thing that will drive customers away. Remember most items sell for 10-20 percent what you originally paid for them. So price it just slightly higher that so there's room to haggle.
