GREENSBORO, N.C. — When you're getting dressed for the cold weather you might think your heavy coat is the most important item to keep you warm or a big chunky knit sweater, but researchers say one of the most important items is actually your undershirt closest to your skin.
Underwear / Long Johns
You don't want to wear a cotton one. Instead, get one made from a sports performance fabric like polyester or nylon. They can help keep moisture off your body. A cotton shirt will get sweaty, and the moisture will make you colder.
Heather Lawler-Sears who manages the outdoor specialty store, Hudson Trail Outfitters in N.W., says to stick with wool and synthetics.
"A thin base layer made of Merino wool does a good job with moisture management and odor control. Your polypropylene and long underwear can work but they can get stinky after a while, " Lawler-Sears said.
Feet
Lawler-Sears says a cheap way to keep your feet warm is to trace your feet on tin foil and stick them in your boots. That helps conduct warmth.
Jewelry
According to weather.gov, there are things you don't want such as rings and watches. The cold makes your fingers contract, and your rings could fall off.
Hands
Weather.gov says mittens work better than gloves because your fingers generate more heat when they're not separated.
Head
Also, you might have heard growing up that about half your body heat leaves from your head. New research suggests it’s closer to 10 percent, but a good hat is still important. You also want to avoid cotton for your hat. Again opt for a moisture-wicking fabric.
