What is conscious uncoupling and how do you do it?

Body language expert, Blanca Cobb, explains conscious uncoupling and why we are seeing a rise in the terms use.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — January is a hot month for uncoupling as calls to divorce attorneys tend to skyrocket. It just so happens to be National Conscious Uncoupling Day. If you're thinking about breaking up with your romantic partner, we have tips to help you consciously uncouple.

Conscious uncoupling is a deliberate and thoughtful approach to ending a romantic relationship. It's based on respect and kindness. However, the concept was popularized by Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin. The term uncoupling has been around since the 1940s, and in the 1970s, sociologist Diane Vaughn introduced the 'uncoupling theory.'

When you talk to your partner about ending your relationship, focus on the outcome you want that's good for both of you. This means having open communication, defining your goals, and redefining your connection and new relationship.

You want to use open body language that makes your partner feel comfortable to amicably parting ways.
