‘We decided this together:’ Longtime Good Morning Show anchor Tracey McCain ready to start new chapter

McCain, a certified coach and fitness instructor, plans to continue her passion for health and wellness with the launch of her fitness brand under AWOL Fitness.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It’s the end of an era for WFMY News 2 come June 23. Longtime Good Morning Show anchor Tracey McCain will sign off one last time.

McCain, whose bright smile started your day for nearly two decades, has decided to leave the news business to spend more time with her family and ultimately begin a personal fitness brand.

“My children are 7, 5, and 2.  Right now, Josiah, Simone and Julian need me at home,” said McCain. “They’re growing up so fast. I don’t want to miss it!”

Her career started at WSHM in Springfield, Massachusetts. Her career then took her to nearby WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut, but home was calling.

McCain returned to North Carolina in 2006 to be closer to her parents in Guilford County. Under the mentorship of legendary anchor Sandra Hughes, McCain quickly worked her way up to the anchor desk. She anchored the Weekend Good Morning Show for 4 years and then the Good Morning Show for the last 12 years.

“Having Sandra and Ed Matthews take me under their wing is an honor! Sandra inspires me to this day, and Ed’s jokes keep me going. We have an unbreakable bond,” said McCain.

Her decision to leave the news industry was not an easy one.

“I prayed about this and talked with my husband and my children. We decided this together. It is hard leaving my News 2 family, but I will still be around. This is home, “said McCain.

For McCain, the timing of her announcement is perfect.

“School just got out and my kids have planned a full schedule of things to do and summer trips for us to take. I’ll be busy, just not waking up at 1:50 a.m. anymore,” said McCain.

McCain, a certified coach and fitness instructor, plans to continue her passion for health and wellness with the launch of her fitness brand under the AWOL Fitness umbrella.

“Flexibility in my schedule is going to be key.  I also get to pursue my other passion which is helping women experience life-changing, and often lifesaving, weight loss transformations,” said McCain.

She currently coaches at the Greensboro-based fitness center three days a week but will expand those hours under the ‘Train with Tracey’ brand this summer. Motivational speaking will also be a part of her new venture.

When asked about her biggest accomplishment, McCain said she treasures her Emmy award, as well as all of the Emmy nominations. She added that she cherishes her friendships at the station and the community’s love, support, and kindness all these years.

As for what McCain will miss most, she said, “I enjoyed being a voice for people who felt they had none. I told their stories. I shared their viewpoint.  I connected with my community. On the other hand, I can’t wait to make my world-class pancakes for my kiddos every morning.”

McCain plans to continue her work in the community by volunteering for several community organizations. Tracey, her husband, Jaron, and their three children will continue to live in Guilford County.
