To stop smoking remember your why

You have a good reason. Here's one trick to remember it every time you go to smoke!

GREENSBORO, N.C. — According to the CDC almost 70 percent of people who smoke want to quit. To help, Novant Health has a program called lifestyle medicine where they look at lifestyle changes to prevent getting sick. It's being run by Dr. Alicia Beal who is a family medicine doctor with certification in lifestyle medicine.

“You have to have is a desire to stop smoking. You can't stop smoking because somebody just tells you to. Now, obviously telling somebody at the doctor does have some impact. But even with the medications that we give, they're helping 30 to 40% of the effort to stopping smoking. It will aid in that amount, but a good chunk of it is just personal desire.” Dr. Beal said.

Your why for quitting is so important that it's worth writing with sharpie on your lighter and the cigarette packs. That way every time you go to smoke you see a reminder first.

If you want more ideas and support quitting, try calling this free hotline: 1-800-quit-now. They will connect you with local councilors and support groups covered by your insurance. Research has shown that getting support like this doubles your chances of quitting.
