GREENSBORO, N.C. — Despite Thursday's crash of an Alamance Burlington School System bus, statistics from the National Safety Council show school buses are still the safest way for students to get to class. The bus is safer than both walking and riding in a car.
Across the country over the past decade, about 1,100 people have died in a crash involving a school bus. Most of the deaths were in the vehicles that crashed with the school bus. About 50 of the deaths were students on a bus, and about 50 other deaths were the drivers of a bus.
Looking at North Carolina, in 2021, there were five deaths related to school buses. Four of them were drivers of the buses. One was a pedestrian hit by a bus. Remember, that part of the 2021 school year was different because of the pandemic. But it's the most recent data that's been released.
There's one other important number to keep in mind. 489,748 school buses run every single day. The vast majority never experience any problems on the road.
