RANDLEMAN, N.C. -- Thanks to the Purple Heart Homesorganization and dozens of volunteers, a wounded veteran in the Triad will receive a life-changing gift.

Pfc. Jeremy Young, 24, from Randleman was shot while on a mission in Afghanistan two years ago.

Thanks to body armor, Young survived. However, he suffered severe leg injuries.

Three weeks ago, his leg was amputated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Since then, he's been recovering and battling some post-surgery complications.

When a HAECO official shared Young's story with the Purple Heart Homes organization, they were eager to help with renovations to Young's home.

And, Home Depot was able to secure funding, through the Home Depot Foundation in Atlanta, to set the project plans in motion.

On Monday, Purple Heart Homes and volunteers got to work building a wheelchair ramp, renovating a bathroom to make it handicap-accessible and landscaping at Young's house.

Their plan was to complete the project by the end of the day on Monday.

Young is a Purple Heart recipient.
