How to boost kids' mental health during Summer break: Monday Motivation

Research shows kids' mental health can decline in the summer. Self-Care Coach Reketta Brown shares ways to support your child's mental health.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — With school out, families may be looking for ways to keep the kids busy. Research shows kids' mental health can decline in the Summer. Self-Care Coach Reketta Brown with Thrive Foundation shares ways to support your child's mental health in this week's Monday Motivation.

“Summer break can impact students’ mental health by allowing them time to have fun, relax, and just enjoy the break from being out of school,” Brown said.  “Make sure your kids have that learning time and time for rest and play. This helps with their emotional wellbeing as well as their physical wellbeing.”

Brown said it’s important children have structure during Summer break.

“If you don’t have that structure for your kids throughout the Summer when it’s time to transition back into school they can have difficulties waking up in the morning and jumping back into school where there is structure throughout the day. It’s important to keep some of that structure, but also have some flexibility.”

Brown said there are many ways parents can provide structure.

“Sign them up for organized structured activities such as summer camps and sports,” Brown said. “They can also create a schedule, so they know what routine they are going to have for the day. They can have a time that they go to bed, a time they wake up, and times blocked out that they do fun and recreational activities.”
