NORTH CAROLINA, USA — Governor Roy Cooper endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for President.
"Kamala Harris should be the next president. I’ve known @vp going back to our days as AGs, and she has what it takes to defeat Donald Trump and lead our country thoughtfully and with integrity. I look forward to campaigning for her as we work to win NC up and down the ticket."
Cooper's endorsement is the latest in a group of democratic party leaders to endorse Harris - including President Joe Biden and the Clintons. Harris isn't automatically the nominee though - but she is the clear front runner going into the democrat’s convention in August.
Many in the party are already talking about who she might pick for a running mate. Among the names being tossed around as a serious contender is Governor Roy Cooper.
Here are three things to know about what Cooper could bring to the ticket:
First like he said he and Harris are old friends and built a lot of trust working with each other as state attorney generals.
Second, Cooper polls well with blue collar workers - a place where Harris is week in the polls. Some of Cooper's biggest achievements as governor have been increasing the number of trade school programs and bringing in more high paying jobs that don't require a college degree.
Third, Cooper might help democrats win North Carolina. He's won six statewide elections here dating back to 2000. And he won in our state even when Donald Trump won North Carolina at the presidential level showing Cooper has a history of attracting more moderate voters.
This comes as the campaign has stressed an importance on winning North Carolina. Harris has been to the state seven times in 2024, including speaking at Dudley High School in Greensboro:
