Help in the community

Guilford County property taxes discount

Guilford County residents who pay property taxes early each year will now receive a 1% discount. The Board of County Commissioners voted to make the change during a work session meeting on April 6.

According to officials, the discount rate will apply to county property and fire district taxes; the increased discount rate does not apply to municipalities as they choose their own discount rate.

Taxes are due on Sept. 1 and those property owners who pay by Aug. 31 will now receive the discount. The change will take effect on July 1.

Greensboro market for SNAP recipients

The City’s Housing and Neighborhood Development Department is the Community Partner of the Week at the season-opening night of the People’s Market at 5:30 pm Thursday, April 13, at 1417 Glenwood Ave. -- thepeoplesmarketgso.com.

The USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, is widely recognized as the nation’s most effective anti-hunger program. The People’s Market doubles customers’ SNAP buying power when they shop at the market.

This weekly event exemplifies the spirit of National Community Development Week.

Winston-Salem free legal help to residents facing eviction

Citizens who are facing evictions may qualify for free legal help through the Right-to-Counsel program, a partnership between the city and Legal Aid of North Carolina, with a goal of reducing housing displacement and homelessness.

The program is funded through the American Rescue Plan Act and is open to tenants in private or federally subsidized housing who meet residency, jurisdictional and income requirements. Those who do not meet requirements may still qualify for mediation through the city’s Department of Human Relations/Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The program grew out of the Eviction Diversion Network, a collaboration among 13 local organizations that work with landlords and tenants.

Citizens who believe they may qualify for the program should contact City Link at 311 and ask for the Human Relations/Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Department or they can contact Legal Aid at NikkiW@legalaidnc.org.
