Does Lingering Snow Mean More Snow in 10 Days?

Is there truth to the tale that if snow sticks around for three days or more, another big snow will come within the next 10 days? We VERIFY.

GREENSBORO, North Carolina — VERIFY QUESTION

This Weather Wednesday comes on the heels of a historic Triad snowfall -- a foot of snow in early December. All that precipitation took nearly a full week to melt, and winter doesn't even start until this Friday.

Ross Carter submitted this VERIFY inquiry: "VERIFY: My mother used to say, if snow hung around for three days it was waiting for more. Is there any truth to the idea that if snow hangs around, it will snow again within 10 days or so?"

VERIFY SOURCE

Eric Chilton - Good Morning Show Meteorologist

VERIFY PROCESS

Chilton said there is no meteorological explanation to support the idea that lingering snow means another snowfall in the near future. However, if snow stays on the ground for days at a time, that means air conditions are cold -- those conditions could pave the way for another "clipper system" to move through and bring more snow.

"In the winter time, sometimes we get clipper systems...multiple lows that ride the jet stream... but there are far too many ingredients to the recipe to say if (snow) definitely will happen."

VERIFY CONCLUSION

Snow that sticks around for a few days could mean another snowfall soon, but it isn't a guarantee.
