Spotting dementia: Thanksgiving reunion clues you shouldn't ignore

This holiday will be the first time you might see an aging loved one in a while and start noticing the signs of dementia.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Thanksgiving will be the first time a lot of people see their aging loved ones in a while. That means there might be some signs of dementia that they are noticing for the first time. Here's what a doctor says to look out for.

“Trouble remembering obviously, but they can also have trouble finding words,” said neurologist Dr. Gayatri Devi. “More difficulty multitasking can be a very early sign of dementia also.”

The AARP says there are three other big warning signs like repetition such as asking the same question or telling the same story over and over again. Also, look for personality changes especially if they seem more anxious than normal. And loss of interest in traditions and events they used to love.

If you notice any of these signs, help is out there. The Alzheimer’s Association has a hotline to help you figure out the next steps for getting your loved one care. You can call 800.272. 3900 anytime day or night.
