‘SEE’ the vision: Delta Sigma Theta celebrates 111 years of sisterhood and service

The Greensboro Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta will mark the anniversary of the historically-Black sorority’s founding.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — "'S.E.E.' the vision...service that engages and inspires" -- it is the motto of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority's Greensboro Alumnae Chapter, a mantra that will take center stage this weekend to celebrate the 111th anniversary of the sorority's founding.

"The Greensboro Alumnae Chapter is doing something very different this year to invite the public. We have opened the doors and opened the windows to invite the public to see what Delta Sigma Theta is all about through the lens of the Greensboro Alumnae Chapter," said president Desiree Best.

Registration for the event at the Greensboro Coliseum Saturday is already at capacity. For the 400 people who signed up, there will be fitness and mental wellbeing presentations by former WFMY anchor Tracey McCain and psychotherapist Nanette Funderburk, PhD, LPC.

The raffle will feature jewelry, and guests will enjoy a silent disco. Descendants of one of the original founders also will be speaking. The purpose of the celebration is to honor the chapter's 22 founders from Howard University, who in 1913 had a vision to make a difference.

"There were 22 strong women back in 1913 who founded this amazing sorority, and they founded this sorority based on social action based on service, and that is what the Greensboro Alumnae Chapter is doing," said anniversary co-chair Indira Lindsay Roberts.

Fellow co-chair Tamara Holloway noted the significance of hosting the anniversary celebration during Black History Month.

"Leading into Black History Month, this event is focused on the empowerment of women and girls, so highlighting everything that African Americans contribute to society and what we as women can do for society as a whole," Holloway said.

WFMY thanks the Deltas for helping with the annual Tools for School drives every year. They bring energy, joy and a passion to service this community.

The anniversary celebration is Sat., Feb. 17 at the Greensboro Coliseum terrace for those who registered. Anyone who did not get tickets can check out the many upcoming opportunities to support the Deltas year-round. The Jabberwock pageant is coming up, and interested families can email the Greensboro Alumnae Chapter.
