Community Walk Raises Suicide Awareness

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. -- Every day in the United States about 117 people commit suicide. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, that means every 12.3 minutes someone takes their own life in the United States. So folks in the Triad are working to raise awareness.

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. -- Every day in the United States about 117 people commit suicide. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, that means every 12.3 minutes someone takes their own life in the United States. So folks in the Triad are working to raise awareness.

Hundreds of people in the Triad will take part in an Out of the Darkness Walk. When you join the effort, you help to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

Thanks to walkers and donors, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20 percent by 2025.

Out of the Darkness Walks are proof that when people work together they can make big changes in the world. They are AFSP's largest fundraiser – they produce millions for suicide prevention programs, unite those who have been affected by suicide, and create communities that are smart about mental health.

The Triad Walk is scheduled for Saturday, October 22 at Triad Park in Kernersville. The walk is from 9 to 11 a.m.

Online registration closes at noon on Friday, October 21. But you can still register in-person before the walk Saturday morning.

You can register online by clicking here.
