GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A small solution could be the answer to a big problem in Guilford County.
A local non-profit builds tiny houses for the homeless in Guilford County and now is your chance to help.
Tiny Houses Greensboro kicked off a fundraising campaign to raise $50,000 to build more tiny houses for those experiencing homelessness.
From now until the money is raised, Tiny Houses Greensboro board members will sleep in their Greensboro model as part of the Sleep INN to Stomp Out Homelessness fundraiser.
Board member Walter Jamison stayed in the tiny house Saturday night. He knows how important is to help the homeless, because he once lived in a tent.
"It's a big transition, from a tent to a house," said Jamison. "It was cold at times, hot in the summer, but this tiny house is a big difference."
The goal of this charity event is to build the first of what they hope to be many Tiny House Villages in Guilford County.
"We'll be making a huge impact with our Veterans who are experiencing homelessness or their just caught in a vicious cycle trying to find housing that's temporary or transitional," said Board Chair Scott Jones.
"We'll be creating permanent, affordable solutions to housing for Veterans possibly even students, creating diverse communities where they'll be able to work together with those that have experienced homelessness that now have a permanent residence to call home."
Tiny Houses Greensboro believes that creating a tiny house community will provide individuals experiencing homelessness with a stable housing environment and community support.
According to the group's website, the community benefits of tiny housing include:
- Providing job training for people experiencing homelessness
- Developing dignity and self-sufficiency
- Learning to work collaboratively with others
- Reducing homelessness in Greensboro
"Life is good to put it in a nutshell," said Jamison.
