Amazon's Big Spring Sale: Are the discounts really as good as they seem?

Free online tools can help you make sure you're getting the best deal.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — First, the biggest sales were on Black Friday. Then Amazon started doing Prime Days. Now there's the Big Spring Sale which kicks off Wednesday, March 20.

The sale promises thousands of spring-related items on deep discounts such as a pair of air purifiers to help with allergies. Amazon says they are 84% off, on sale for $62 down from a listed price of $399. But with any big online sale, 2 Wants To Know is here to make sure you're getting the best price.

That's where the PayPal Honey Chrome extension comes in. It shows the price history. Within 120 days, Amazon has only sold the item for $81. In all that time, it was never sold for the listed price at $399, so the item is not 84% off. It's more like 20% off.

The Honey extension shows the price history on Amazon for up to 120 days.

Still, the Big Spring Sale is the best price in 120 days. And it's the best price you'll find on the internet right now. We know that by searching for the item on Google Shopping. They scour the internet for the lowest prices and tell you how much an item sells on different websites.

Also, make sure as you shop on Amazon to keep an eye out for coupons. They will show up in green text offering an extra discount. You have to check the box or you won't get the discount!

And remember when Amazon has big sales, other retailers follow suit. Target and Walmart also have deep discounts advertised right now. So it always pays to shop around.
