GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — A dire need for adoptions, fosters, and volunteers is why the Good Morning Show is taking the WFMY '2 The Rescue' initiative on the road to Guilford County Animal Services (GCAS) this Tues., Nov. 21, in hopes of helping homeless pets find forever families in time for the holidays.
GCAS has a wide variety of dogs, cats, and other critters, like rabbits and guinea pigs, up for adoption. Adopters must be 18 with a valid government-issued ID. The shelter does not put 'holds' or 'reserves' on pets.
Adoptable animals come with spaying or neutering. Dog adoption fees are $50, cats are $25, kittens and puppies six months and younger are $75, senior dogs are $25, senior cats are $10 and rabbits/guinea pigs are $10.
For December, GCAS is partnering with Bissell Foundations for the 'Empty the Shelter' campaign, reducing adoption fees and including a special "home for the holidays" ornament with each adoption.
DOGS
- Charmander (DA2-2)
- Meet Charmander! Charmander is a 1-year-old Dalmatian mix. He is heartworm-negative, neutered, and weighs about 55 lbs. Charmander has charmed staff and volunteers with his habit of curling up underneath the blankets in his kennel, with the cold weather this week, who can blame him? He is partially deaf but seems to be about to hear loud and high-pitched noises, especially if it sounds like a 'treat'.
- Loki (DA2-5)
- Meet Loki! Loki is an 8-year-old terrier mix. She is heartworm-negative, spayed, and weighs about 57 lbs. Loki greets people by showing off her wiggles and will happily accept treats. She is partially or fully deaf, but she will sit for treats if you show her one. She lived in a home with another dog before she arrived at the shelter.
- Marie (DA2-7) - alternate, NO TREATS HAVING SURGERY
- Meet Marie! Marie is a 1-year-old Chinese Shar-Pei mix. She is heartworm-negative, will be spayed, and weighs about 55 lbs. Marie is timid and takes a little time to warm up, but when she does she enjoys receiving affection, especially having her ears scratched.
- Jovie (DA2-11)
- Meet Jovie! Jovie is a 7-month-old Black Labrador Retriever mix. She is heartworm-negative, spayed, and weighs about 43 lbs. Jovie is a very smart pup who knows sit and down. She enjoys affection and will lean into you for more attention. She enjoys long walks and will happily accept treats as rewards.
- Roni (DA3-9)
- Meet Roni! He is a neutered, 1-year-old medium-sized mixed breed. He is heartworm-negative and weighs 52 lbs. He is an incredibly fun, energetic boy! Roni radiates joy and is simply happy to be out and about playing with toys or being around his person. He could use some training to help with his jumpiness but is treat motivated so it could be a good reward for training!
- Xara (DA4-6)
- Meet Xara! An affectionate girl, Xara is a 3-year-old black labrador mix. She is heartworm-positive, spayed, and weighs 45 lbs. Xara enjoys treats and food but is very gentle with taking them from you. She enjoys receiving affection and will climb into your lap or flop on your lap for belly rubs!
- Donald (DA4-10)
- Meet Donald! This adorable lab mix is about 6 years old, neutered, heartworm negative, and about 60 lbs. Donald enjoys playing fetch in the yard and taking long walks. He is very affectionate and has a kind, friendly disposition. This sweet boy is treat-motivated and already knows the command “sit”! Donald is looking for a family who will play fetch with him, take him on leisurely walks, and snuggle with him on the couch.
- Hachi (DA5-1)
- Meet Hachi! A very playful and dapper pup! Hachi is just over one-year-old medium mixed breed. He is heartworm-negative, neutered, and about 40 lbs. Hachi enjoys his treats and playing with toys. Hachi is fantastic on a leash and already knows “sit” and “shake!” He enjoys playing hard and loving hard as well.
- Carnival (DA5-14)
- Meet Carnival! She is a spayed, four-year-old black lab mix, who is heartworm-negative and about 64 lbs. Carnival is one smart little lady! She knows “sit” “shake” “down” and will play fetch! Carnival is described as playful and affectionate by staff and volunteers. This beautiful girl is looking for a family to play fetch with and to teach her even more tricks!
- Lorenzo (DA6-1)
- Meet Lorenzo! An older gentleman, Lorenzo is a 7-year-old boxer mix. He is heartworm-positive, neutered, and weighs 60 lbs. Lorenzo is treated motivated and gets very excited when he gets offered one. He also is a mush, enjoying pets, and belly rubs, and can be a nice couch buddy.
- Miss Honey (DA6-8)
- Meet Miss Honey! Miss Honey is a 4-year-old shepherd mix. She is heartworm-negative, spayed, and weighs about 49 lbs. She is a very good leash walker which reflects her easy-going attitude. Miss Honey is a little timid but once she warms up to people, she is affectionate and will lean against you for pets.

- Mavis
- Meet Mavis! Mavis is a 1-year-old black cat. She is spayed, FELV negative, and waiting for her new home. Mavis is a little timid but once she warms up to people, she will accept affection and give the quietest purrs. While in a temporary foster, she did well with their other cat and tolerated a dog in the home.
- Tiffany
- Meet Tiffany! Tiffany is a 3-year-old calico cat. She is spayed, FELV negative, and ready to find her new home. Tiffany is a timid cat and will take some time to warm up once she is adopted. When she is comfortable, she will roll over onto her back. If you’re quiet enough you can hear her small purrs when you pet her.
- Gravity
- Meet Gravity! Gravity is a 2-year-old black and white cat. She is spayed, FELV negative, and ready to find her new home. A little shy, Gravity enjoys hiding underneath blankets or her bed. If you sneak a peek at her, she will let you pet her after she sniffs you. When she receives affection, she will lean into the pets but prefers to stay underneath the safety of her covers.
- Viola
- Meet Viola! Viola is a 4-year-old black cat. She is spayed, FELV negative, and ready to find her new home. She came into the shelter with one of her kittens, Vamp, and has been housed with her. Viola is a little timid, but once she is comfortable, she will lean into affection and even give some soft purrs!
- Vamp
- Meet Vamp! Vamp is a 2-year-old black cat. She is spayed, FELV negative, and ready to find her new home. She came into the shelter with her mother and has been housed with her. Vamp is friendly and enjoys pets. She will roll over for affection, giving you purrs and showing off her expert biscuit-making skills!
- Cherokee
- Meet Cherokee! Cherokee is a 3 ½ year old cat. She is spayed, FELV negative, and ready to find her new home! She is friendly with other cats though she is a little timid. When she warms up, she will accept affection and even headbutt you for some more.
- Dorian
- Meet Dorian! Dorian is a 7-year-old gray and white cat. He is neutered, FELV negative, and ready to find his new home. He is an affectionate older cat who enjoys getting chin and cheek scratches and will roll over when you pet him sometimes. He has a very quiet purr, but he seems content to just be a pet and relax.
