GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Students from 33 elementary and middle schools competed at the Guilford County Schools spelling bee Wednesday.

Penn-Griffin School for the Arts hosted the district's spelling bee. To compete in the district spelling bee, students had to win their classroom spelling bee. Winners from the district bee will get to compete at the regional and state levels.

The winner of the district spelling bee was Tejas Santanam.

"Instead of memorizing long lists of words, it is best for students to learn spelling patterns for words based on their language of origin, such as Greek, Latin, French or even Hawaiian," says Susan Szypulski, English/Language Arts curriculum specialist for GCS and organizer of the district's event.

The GCS spelling bee included students from third- through eighth-grade at participating schools. The first round will be for practice only and then the competition for who will be named the district's top speller will begin.
