Gangs In Greensboro? Police Educating The Public About Gangs In Their Own Backyard

Greensboro Police will be providing several community classes teaching people about gangs.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro Police got enough questions about gangs in Greensboro they decided to address them all at once.

Which is why they are hosting two different classes on the subject.

“There’s always a lot of myths and misinformation in the community about gangs – things we see on TV, we think it’s real so I think it’s a great time to talk about what is real and what isn’t? What exists in Greensboro and what doesn’t? What crimes are associated with gangs,” these are the questions Greensboro Police Department Community Engagement Manager, Jenny Caviness said they want to answer with these classes.

You may remember a few months ago they hosted a similar class that dealt with active shooters.

Actual officers will lead the classes, and it will be a presentation followed by a question and answer session.

Police say their main goals are to let people know certain crimes associated with gangs, general education about gangs, a few things about known gangs in our area, and certain myths that still hover around gangs.

"If we don’t have our community, it makes it very hard to do police work. So when you’re looking at things like gangs and crime and having citizens reporting suspicious activity or unusual activity you never know where those calls lead. Usually they call into crime stoppers and they get all kinds of information. That’s how a lot of crimes are solved," said Caviness.

The two classes so far are booked, but they say if there is enough interest they could offer more in the future.

One class is on Wednesday, February 20, from 5:30-6:30 pm and the second class will be Monday, February 25, from 12-1 pm.

You must sign-up before attending the classes. You can find that link here.
