GREENSBORO, N.C. — I know you've heard about the frozen waffle recall, but I want you to see it. The recall list includes 500 waffle products. The majority of them are the store brands of big chains: Aldi, Dollar General, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Publix, Target, and Walmart, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's. The one brand name is Kodiak Cakes.
If you have a recalled product, you should not eat it. Take it back to the store to get a refund.
Routine testing at a manufacturing facility found the possible listeria contamination. The bacteria can cause an infection. Symptoms range from fever to muscle aches, and loss of balance. Those at highest risk with a listeria infection are pregnant women, newborns, adults 65+, and people with weakened immune systems.
How does a frozen waffle get contaminated with listeria?
The bacteria is found in soil, water, and animal feces. Most often, you hear about listeria impacting raw foods and meat and you can see how it's connected. But a frozen waffle? The answer often comes down to machinery.
"We have a more and more complicated food supply chain, so at every step of food processing, there's the opportunity for contamination.08 Consumers want ready-to-eat food so of course they're more processed as a result," said Dr. Celine Gounder, Editor-at-large for Public Health, KFF Health News.
So far, there have been no confirmed reports of illnesses or deaths linked to the waffle recall. Let's keep it that way. Check your freezer against this full list of recalled waffles.
