KERNERSVILLE, N.C. -- Three North Carolina inmates who saved a man from a burning pickup truck hope that their actions change the public's image of work crews.

According to the Associated Press Michael Martin, Ahmad T. Lewis and Cedric Wilson Jr. were riding in an N.C. Department of Transportation truck on Sept. 4 when they spotted the burning truck on the shoulder of a road near Kernersville.

Wilson said he picked up a fire extinguisher while Lewis and Martin raced to the burning pickup. Lewis pulled the driver out of the truck, while Wilson put the fire out.

Martin said he wants people to know that while their vests say "inmate," the people wearing them aren't necessarily bad people. He said they're people who have made bad choices and are trying to change.
