Yes, it really is snowing in the North Carolina mountains

The flakes were flying on Tuesday afternoon in high elevations of the mountains

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's early, but snow is already flying in the North Carolina mountains. Flakes flying in the sky were spotted in some high elevations of Western NC on Tuesday afternoon, marking the first of the year seen across the state.

Cameras confirmed snow falling in popular ski areas like Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain on Tuesday. Our WFMY News 2 Weather Team says that a cold front is moving through the state and that this disturbance is created some scattered rain showers that will move through NC through the evening.

"This front has just enough moisture to squeeze out a few showers," says Chief Meteorologist Tim Buckley. "In the mountains, the high elevations can lower the temperatures enough that it can be cold enough for snow."

The snow is mainly happening above 4,000 feet. It may continue long enough to allow for a light coating or small accumulation in some of the highest elevations overnight.

Snow is possible in the High Country for the first time this season.

Cold weather will also allow for low temperatures across the state the rest of the workweek. Temperatures will dip into the 30s even in the Piedmont on Thursday and Friday mornings. Frost may be possible.
