Fireworks & your pets: Keep them safe & happy this Fourth of July

Most pets don't like the big booms associated with fireworks. It's the most common night for pets to run off.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This is the week for fireworks! They're a great sight, but the sound is the problem if you have pets.

"When pets hear loud noises they often have anxiety and can even run away. Make sure your microchips and tags are all up to date," said Dr. Kelley Gephardt, Happy Tails Veterinary Emergency Clinic.

She says Thundersthirts are a great option for dogs for noise anxiety, anti-anxiety supplements can work as well, and she suggests exercising your dog early in the day before the noises start. She says a tired dog is a good dog!

If you know your pet has a sound phobia or a noise phobia, Dr. Gephardt says to make sure you create a safe place in the house for them ahead of time. If you think your pet needs anxiety medications, make the call to your vet now, before the holiday.

And if neighborhood fireworks are your thing, leave the dog inside.

"Keep your pet inside if you are doing fireworks because pets can chase the fireworks. We've seen pets get injured in the mouth, eyes, and face.  If you are setting off your own fireworks, keep your pets inside," said Gephardt.
