RAMSEUR, N.C. — Update on Friday, February 21: Randolph County Fire Marshal's Office determined the origin of the fire to be in the area of a trailer adjacent to the building containing wood dust and chips. The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, but was most likely the result of a spark created during the wood chipping process. Fire damage was contained to one-third of the building involved and caused an estimated $2 million dollars in damage.
Update: Randolph County's Fire chief confirms the fire has been extinguished. Investigators are still determining a cause.
Fire crews are battling a large fire at May Furniture on Reed Creek Road in Ramseur, Tuesday morning.
The fire broke out around 5 a.m.
Erik Beard, Fire Marshal with Randolph County Fire, says an officer spotted the flames and called 911. Fire crews rushed to the scene in about six minutes. When they arrived, the building was engulfed in flames.
Fire crews have the fire contained and are still working to put out hot spots.
They hope to completely extinguish the fire by later this evening.
Beard says fire investigators will return to the scene Wednesday morning to start their investigation to determine a cause.
Right now, crews are using a drone to find hot spots.
Once the fire is out, investigators will work to find out the cause of the fire. About nine fire crews responded to the scene. No one was hurt and no one was inside the building when the fire happened.
