'He deserved to still be here': Family still mourning 1 year after tragic deadly shooting

Devoughn Carthan's family is urging anyone to come forward with information on the 41-year-old's death.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A family is still seeking answers one year after a man was murdered in Greensboro. Last August, Greensboro police found Devoughn Carthen dead in his car—he had been shot. For the past year, Carthen's family has struggled to sleep, knowing that the person who took the beloved 41-year-old father away from his children is still not behind bars.

"He is someone, he has a name, and he was a great young man making a life for himself and his two children. He deserved to still be here today," Carthen’s sister, Lacresha Silva said. "No mother should feel the pain that my mom has been feeling. This is her baby."

Silva said Carthen was sleeping in his car on Overland Heights when he was shot. He had recently moved out of his home, as he and his wife were going through a divorce. Silva was on FaceTime with him just hours before her brother was tragically killed. She mentioned that Carthen seemed worried about his safety that night but never imagined it would be the last time she spoke to him.

"We want the people that did this to Devoughn to spend their life behind bars," Silva said. "Please put yourself in our shoes and realize that you could remain anonymous while providing valuable information. We know people saw things, we know people had ring cameras, and we're just asking people to please, please, please come forward."

Carthen is originally from Palo Alto, CA but moved to Raeford, North Carolina in his 30's. He brought his son along with him and opened up a car rental service. He also married Julie Carthen.

She said Carthen's death has been very difficult for his two children. He has a son that's 12 and a daughter that is 21. Police have released very limited information in this case, and there are no suspects or persons of interest.

However, Crime Stoppers is urging anyone with information to speak up. It's offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Silva said her family is more than willing to add to that amount to finally bring them closure and justice for Carthen.
