GREENSBORO, N.C. — The state treasurer's office asked for the killing of a Greensboro officer to be called a line-of-duty death.
It cannot pay out benefits to the family until the state industrial commission signs off.
“It is imperative that we support our men and women in blue as they put their lives on the line 24 hours a day,” Treasurer Dale R. Folwell said. “Every officer I know is ‘on duty’ when he or she is out in public. Sgt. Nix was a selfless public servant who exemplified what it means to be trusted with protecting our citizens. That’s what he was doing when he was brutally murdered.”
Sergeant Dale Nix died a few weeks ago.
Greensboro police said the off-duty officer tried to stop people from stealing beer from a Sheetz gas station when one of the suspects shot and killed him.
The Nix family will receive $100,000 if the state signs off.
The City of Greensboro already qualifies Sgt Nix's killing as a line-of-duty death.
