GREENSBORO, N.C. — A pesky pest is headed toward the Triad. It won't harm you, but your lawn could be in big trouble.
These are fall armyworms.
Their turning yards brown across the southeast.
They pop up every year to some degree.
If you're dealing with one - a pest control expert says it won't be hard to spot.
The bugs can devour your lawn in just a few days.
"They'll just damage your lawn and just make it look gross, you know, kind of have brown patches all over the place,"
An NC state expert told us we may be seeing more of the insect because of tropical storm Debby.
The winds pushed them farther north out of Florida.
He told us that grass tends to rebound nicely from the impact of the insect.
As for dealing with armyworms, our pest control expert says people can opt for pesticides.
"It's all up to someone's personal preference. You know, it just depends on how, how green you want your yard, how concerned you are, how, how much of a passion you have for the, for your lawn. Um, so it's, uh, it's really up to them, you know, everybody has their own thresholds,"
Right now Charlotte is getting the brunt of the worms.
Our area can expect to see them start popping up in the next month before they start to die off.
