E-scooters and e-bikes returning to Greensboro

After years of back and forth, the city gave Bird Rides Inc. a permit.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Beep beep! Electric scooters and bikes for rent are finally coming back to Greensboro.

The city announced on Tuesday they issued an operator permit to Bird Rides Inc., allowing them to offer e-scooters and e-bikes for rent around the city.

Bird will be offering free test rides and UNC Greensboro staff will be giving away helmets during Spartapalooza, the university’s annual student carnival.

The free test rides will be available from 3-4 p.m. on Saturday, April 13.

Several electric scooters and bike services have come and gone in the city for the past several years.

The city of Greensboro came up with rules for e-scooter and e-bike services back in 2018.

Those companies now have to get a permit from the city to place their scooters and bikes within the city limits.

Here are the safety guidelines on e-bikes and e-scooters on the city's website:

  • Only people 18 and older may ride these e-bikes and e-scooters.
  • Only ride on city streets with a speed limit of 35 mph or less.
  • Follow all traffic laws like other vehicles, such as riding only on the right side of the road, stopping at traffic signals and stop signs, and yielding to pedestrians.
  • No riding on sidewalks or in parking decks.
  • You may use bike lanes.
  • When parking your scooter, please pay close attention to the area around you. If parking on the sidewalk, leave at least a six-foot wide clear pathway for pedestrians. Do not block sidewalk dining areas, bus stops, handicapped ramps or parking, driveways, loading zones, bike racks or benches.
  • Helmets are strongly encouraged.
