75-year-old woman dies after electric recliner catches fire, house explodes

She was airlifted to a hospital where she died from her injuries.

LEXINGTON, N.C. — A 75-year-old woman has died after her Lexington home caught fire and exploded.

According to the Davidson County Sheriff's Office, the fire was accidental.

The South Lexington Volunteer Fire Department identified June Leonard as the victim of the July 5 house fire and explosion in Lexington. Her obituary said she died the following day.

Fire Chief Darren Kirkus said it appears the fire at the home on Old Mountain Road was caused by an electrical problem linked to an electric recliner. He said the flames reached a nearby 100-gallon propane tank and exploded.

Chief Kirkus said Leonard's son was the person who pulled her from the burning house. She was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with severe cuts and burns. On July 6, she died from her injuries.

Leonard's granddaughter, Harley James, shared a statement about the person her grandmother was.

"Throughout her life she traveled locally and long distance, playing the piano and singing the gospel. She sang and played with so much soul, love and passion. She loved being a nurse, taking care of and helping others, it was a passion of hers. She was a funny person, she loved to pick and cut up, and make jokes. If you ask anybody about June they will tell you she was a feisty redhead and always said what was on her mind. But everyone loved her for that," James said.

Leonard's funeral is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Lexington.
