EDEN, N.C. — Two Eden police officers helped save the life of a 3-year-old from drowning in Dan River on Tuesday, May 21.

Police got the call around 12:45 p.m. and were dispatched to the Leaksville Landing on Highway 87.

The 3-year-old had fallen into the river from the landing steps and was floating without a life vest, according to the caller.

Officers found the toddler floating face down in the river when they arrived.

Officers Josh Roberts and Timothy Knight entered the river in full police gear.

Roberts was able to grab the toddler and swim to safety with Knight.

Lieutenant Andy Johnson then carried the 3-year-old to stable ground for life-saving measures.

Officers then learned Rockingham County EMS couldn't reach them, Roberts and Knight sprinted the kid to the ambulance.

The child was taken to a local hospital for further treatment.

We are glad to hear the 3-year-old is in stable condition at the hospital!
