Businesses, retail stores, traffic lights affected by major power outage in Whitsett

A Duke Energy representative said the power has been restored.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — More than 5,000 households and businesses were without power in eastern Guilford County this morning after a major power outage. Power has since been restored.

The Duke Energy outage map showed customers in the Whitsett area, north and south of I-40 were impacted. The outage began around 9:30 a.m.

Power was restored around noon after Duke Energy rerouted their customers' power sources.

Duke Energy says the outage was caused by damaged underground lines caused by crews unaffiliated with Duke Energy who were doing some excavations in a subdivision.

The outage affected major gas stations and commercial, fast food and retail businesses.

The Guilford County Sheriff's Office is currently on the scene directing traffic.

Duke Energy’s website says the cause of the outage is unknown at this time.

We’re working to find out more from local officials.
