Prosecutors: Driver returned to scene of deadly crash in a different car

Joshua Brown is facing felony hit-and-run charges in the crash that killed 17-year-old Daniela Mendiola.

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — The driver, who was charged two weeks after a 17-year-old died in Alamance County, appeared in court Thursday.

Joshua Brown's bond was set at $50,000. Troopers charged him with felony hit-and-run for the crash that killed Daniela Mendiola.

Highway Patrol said a car hit her as she was walking on Oak Grove Church Road. Troopers initially didn't charge Brown because he returned to the scene after the crash.

Mendiola's family demanded more answers and gathered outside the Alamance County Courthouse earlier this week, pushing for justice.

After further investigation, Brown was charged. He turned himself in to authorities Wednesday.

During court on Thursday, prosecutors said Brown left the scene but returned about 15 minutes later in a different car - a claim that Mendiola's family stated from the beginning. Troopers initially said they were under the impression that the car involved returned to the scene.
