Driver dies in fiery Greensboro car crash after hitting a tree head-on

Police say a few units are still at the scene as they wait for the tree to be removed.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — One person is dead in Greensboro after hitting a tree head-on Saturday morning along South Elm- Eugene Street.

Officers responded to the crash around 2:53 a.m. 

Officers said the driver was traveling southbound on South Elm-Eugene Street when they drove into the median, hit a tree head-on, and the car caught fire. 

According to police, one person was in the car during the crash who died. 

Police are not releasing the driver's name until the next-of-kin is notified.

Due to the crash, many nearby lanes were closed for most of Saturday morning.

As of 8:50 a.m. a spokesperson for the department said a few crews were still at the scene while they waited to remove the tree. The department encourages drivers to take another route.
