Driver cited in WSSU Homecoming Parade crash that injured 5 pedestrians

Two vehicles and five pedestrians were involved in the accident.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem police have issued citations for a man they say crashed with a vehicle and five pedestrians during the Winston-Salem State Homecoming Parade on Saturday morning.

Police said 62-year-old Jerry Haynie was cited for two civil infractions: failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision with a pedestrian and failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision with a vehicle.

Police said the primary cause of the crash was attributed to failure to maintain control of the vehicle.

The crash happened on Saturday and sent all pedestrians to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said both vehicles and the five pedestrians were all participants in the parade.

Police said Haynie stopped to let the parade advance, but then began to move unexpectedly and crashed with the pedestrians and another vehicle.

Haynie will appear in court on January 30.
